Imagine sitting outside, soaking in the bright sunshine on the wide-open prairie. The brilliant blue sky above lights up everything in sight and the long, green grass waves softly in the wind. You can hear the soft whisper of a busy bumblebee sucking nectar from a purple pasque flower, and occasionally, a red-breasted robin breaks the silence with a loud chirp. The afternoon sun warms your back through your t-shirt, and you breathe in the clean prairie air, basking in the solitude.
You peer through your scope to get a better view of the softly sloping hill a few hundred yards away. The light brown dirt seems to be constantly in motion – you can see small brown heads repeatedly popping up, making the ground prickle. You recognize those little heads… prairie dogs! From the comfort of your seat, you aim at one hole in particular.
You squeeze the trigger gently, and one little varmint bobs up and then drops back down into his hole. All the while, the rest of the nuisance village continues on with their nonsense, seeming completely unbothered. You hit one… now repeat!
If you’re looking to hunt prairie dogs, there’s no place like South Dakota! In our great state, prairie dogs are considered varmints, so there are no seasonal restrictions and no daily limits. You’re free to keep on shooting!
Hunting varmints (a category that includes critters like gophers, prairie dogs, raccoons, skunks, and coyotes) can help you develop your rifle skills and become a sharper shooter. You’ll get excellent practice shooting moving targets in real-world environments. Prairie dog hunting allows you to hone many valuable skills, including estimating range and predicting wind drift or deflection. When you hunt with us at Dakota Prairie Lodge & Resort, you’ll have ample opportunities to work on your craft.
South Dakota has more black-tailed prairie dogs than any other state. In the fall, our hunters are abuzz about pheasants, but come summer, prairie dog hunting is all the rage. Our Lodge is located in Kimball, South Dakota, where prairie dogs abound. Their “towns” – the name for their network of underground tunnels – can sprawl for up to a mile.
We’ve partnered with local farmers who are thrilled to have our help thinning out their prairie dog population. The dreaded varmints ruin their fields by digging hundreds of holes and vast tunnel networks, so our farmer partners are happy to have us. Bring your friends to share in the excitement of shooting down our local pests!
When you stay with us at Dakota Prairie Lodge & Resort, you’ll enjoy an all-inclusive prairie dog hunting experience like you’ve never seen before. We will provide all lodging, all food and beverages, field transportation, and access to every first-class amenity at our luxurious lodge. Give us a call today to reserve your place – our calendar fills up quickly!
Looking for an unforgettable prairie dog hunting experience? You can’t go wrong at Dakota Prairie Lodge & Resort. You’re sure to make a lifetime of memories that you’ll be looking forward to repeating from the moment you depart the Lodge until the moment you pull up again the next year. Our Lodge is styled in a traditional, rustic fashion sure to make all of our hunters feel right at home.
In addition to the rural atmosphere and expansive prairie, the Lodge offers best-in-class modern amenities and comforts that our guests are constantly raving about. We have a smoking room, a gym, on-site laundry, a spa, a fire pit, and plenty more facilities that you’re sure to enjoy. Plus, you’ll find comfortable beds, spacious rooms, and common areas full of card tables, pool tables, plush leather couches, and well-stocked bars. Whatever you’d like to do while you’re at the Lodge, we’ll aim to provide it.
In order to accommodate both early birds and those who prefer to sleep in, we serve our continental breakfast buffet-style. A robust meal with options including eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits, fruit, and oatmeal (and don’t forget plenty of coffee) is the best way to prepare for a day full of hunting. If you have a particular request or dietary restriction, our chef will be happy to whip up something special just for you.
And if you don’t find hunting prairie dogs sufficiently challenging, we invite you to start your morning in our exercise room. Equipped with top-tier cardio equipment as well as a wide selection of weights, you can get your heart rate pumping before the day even really begins. There’s nothing like a half-hour on the elliptical machine to wake you up!
As every prairie dog hunter knows, timing is everything. In the summer months, our resident black-tailed prairie dogs spend the hottest parts of the day sleeping. They are most active above ground in the morning and evening, with their peak times occurring before noon and again in the late afternoon.
We’ll fit in some shooting before the sun gets too high above our heads, and then we’ll take a break for lunch. After taking down plenty of prairie dogs, you’re sure to work up a healthy appetite. If not, we’re sure that seeing plates of hearty sandwiches or bowls of scrumptious chili will help! We might even get some hotdogs and hamburgers and enjoy a summer day grilling out on our large deck. No matter what delicious lunch we’re serving, we’ll make sure there are plenty of cookies to go around, too.
In the afternoon, we have plenty of activities – both indoor and outdoor – to keep you occupied and enjoying your time on the prairie. You might want to get some more practice in with unlimited shells and sporting clays at any of our 13 stations.
We’ll share a sumptuous supper highlighting South Dakota’s finest in our gorgeous dining room that overlooks acres of grassy prairie. Whether you prefer a succulent prime rib or walleye fished right out of the nearby Missouri River, our cooks are sure to deliver. And don’t forget a homemade slice of hot apple pie to finish the meal!
After dinner, you’re free to enjoy the evening entertainment of your choice. We’re happy to work with your group to set up an excursion – whether that’s to peruse local nightlife opportunities or check out new shotguns at Cabela’s. We offer transportation to ensure everyone gets there and back safely.
Many of our hunters like to take advantage of the fact that the Lodge is located almost on the border of Mountain Time, so it stays light nice and late – in the summer, we have sunlight until about 10 p.m. Many groups will enjoy the warm summer nights and hang out on the deck after supper, calling in coyotes, shooting tannerite, or cleaning their guns.
If you decide to kick back at the Lodge, we have plenty of activities and offerings that are sure to fill the great room with loud laughs, stiff drinks, and stories to remember. We have noticed that tales about one’s prairie dog prowess become quite remarkable after a few hours at the bar! You’ll want to make sure your hunting buddies remember every great shot you made!
Whatever you decide to do with your evening, we encourage you to get a good night’s rest in our comfortable, cozy rooms. Hunting requires your full attention, so we want you to be alert while you’re in the field the next day. As always, safety first!
