It’s a crisp spring morning in Kimball, South Dakota, and you’re lying in wait beside a field of winter wheat. You spot the flock coming in from afar – a vortex of white birds filling the sky, ready to descend on the field full of decoys. Their sharp eyes scan the field for signs of human intruders, but all they see is what looks like thousands of other birds having a morning snack… in reality, they are clocking the windsock decoys, strategically placed by our expert guides to mimic the dispersal of a real flock.
Snow geese are smart, but we’re smarter. Unbothered by the 2,000 unexpected breakfast companions, the first few groups of geese land on the field, ready to eat combined corn and other seeds. You are eager to fire on your first bird of the day, but you hold back, patiently waiting for the perfect moment.
Dressed in a white suit as a camouflage and hidden behind a blind, you observe quietly as more and more white birds alight on the field. The exhilaration of bird hunting has your heart thumping steadily in your chest. It’s almost time. The geese overhead begin to plummet downward, and all you can hear is their beating wings, tipped with black, growing closer and closer.
As the migrators barrel toward the field, you feel it in your bones – it’s time. The first bang! rings out through the cool morning air, and a goose falls from the sky. The honks and flapping wings of the geese are replaced by the sound of 12-gauge shotguns firing and the tang of gunpowder floating through the air. The geese that have already landed now startle, rising back up from the field, joining forces with the swirling masses of the flock in the air. Shots ring out again and again as birds splatter the field.
By the time it’s over, countless feathered bodies will litter the ground. On a good day, the numbers might approach fifty birds per hunter. When it comes to hunting snow geese, no bird limits stand in your way.
As the flock (or what’s left of it) disappears into the distance, the survivors making their escape, your group climbs back onto the bus. You’re tired but invigorated, ready for an afternoon of relaxation and camaraderie in the Lodge. Maybe you’ll play a hand of poker with friends or enjoy an aromatic cigar and a warming beverage before indulging in a sumptuous supper prepared in traditional South Dakotan style.
Our hunters feel right at home in our cozy, warm Lodge that reflects rural architecture married with modern comforts, promotes local cuisine, and encourages appreciation of South Dakota’s rich cultural heritage. Situated along the Central Flyway, our Brule County location is perfectly positioned for snow goose hunting. In fact, our flyway routinely sees over 2 million snow geese come through each year – in 2024, over 2.3 million geese were estimated to pass through the Pukwana, SD area. Our snow goose hunting season runs for two months in the late winter and early spring, which is the ideal time to maximize shooting opportunities.
Unlike some other waterfowl hunting licenses, the license process for snow geese is quite simple. These licenses are readily available in South Dakota for both residents and non-residents. You will never have to worry about the luck of the draw – getting a snow goose license is virtually guaranteed.
Additionally, there is no limit on the number of snow geese that each hunter can harvest. Due to the massive population size of these fowl, you can shoot as many as you’d like. Our expert guides estimate that a strong hunting day could yield as many as fifty birds per person. Talk about an incredible experience!
When you hunt with us at Dakota Prairie Lodge & Resort, you will be treated to best-in-class accommodations and one-of-a-kind outdoor experiences that you cannot find anywhere else. We offer a comfortable Lodge outfitted with two large common areas, an inviting dining room, multiple bars, and even a cigar lounge. You’ll get to enjoy the best parts of hunting without worrying about the prep work. Our experienced guides will scout snow goose feeding locations and lay the windsock decoys before you step foot on the field – so when you’re ready to shoot, everything will already be set up for you.
Our snow goose hunting packages provide an all-inclusive experience. The only items NOT included are ammo and guns. We recommend a 12-gauge shotgun for snow goose hunting, and we do have some guns available for rent if you want to try out one of our weapons. For ammo, we recommend bringing 250 shells for a three-day trip. We suggest three-inch BB shells.
For snow goose hunting, bird cleaning and packaging are also NOT included. Due to the sheer number of birds you will have the opportunity to hunt, it is not possible to clean and package all of them in a timely fashion.
Hunting snow geese along the Central Flyway is an incredible experience that will leave you excited to return next year.
